How it works

At the assigned start time for a given wave (i.e. Ages 6-10), there will be a course walkthrough. Everyone competing in that wave is expected to be present for the walkthrough. We'll go through the course, explain the rules of each obstacle, and demonstrate how it's intended to be completed, with time for questions. From there, we'll run everyone through the course, one person at a time, in a randomized order.

With any spare time we have in between waves, competitors will be allowed "Redemption Time." This is time where competitors from that wave are able to go back and try the obstacles on the course in an open gym setting.

Divisions

Age divisions will be based on the athlete's age on January 1st, 2027.

  • Ages 6-8
  • Ages 9-10
  • 11-12 Male
  • 11-12 Female
  • 13-14 Male
  • 13-14 Female
  • 15-39 Male
  • 15-39 Female
  • 40+ Male
  • 40+ Female

Difficulty divisions will be self-selected, based on experience level. The beginner and intermediate groups will run the same course in the same wave, but will have separate leaderboards/podiums.

Beginner: For athletes who have not competed in ninja before, or are very inexperienced.

Intermediate: For athletes who have competed in ninja comps before; or who are somewhere around blue-grey belt skill level, or are on Team Flame.

Very Scary: For the top level ninja athletes in the gym, this any-age division gets a course of it's own at the end of the day. One trembles to imagine what horrors await these athletes, as Coach Gavin's fury is unleashed upon the gym.

Competition Format

This competition will use a custom format/ruleset that is much more forgiving than a standard one-and-done course (where athletes are out of the competition if they fail a single obstacle).

For this competition, the athlete will get 3 attempts per obstacle. If they complete an obstacle, they move on to the next. If they fail an obstacle, they will return to the start of that obstacle, wait for the countdown from the judge, and then attempt the obstacle again. If the athlete finishes the obstacle within those 3 attempts, they get to continue on. If they are unable to finish the obstacle, they are considered to have "failed out." All this means is that they will no longer accumulate points for obstacles they complete. However, at this point, the timer will continue ticking down, and so long as they have time remaining, they are welcome to continue running the rest of the course for fun!

For those familiar with the various ninja leagues and competition formats, this is essentially the WNL Challenge Course ruleset and scoring, but with the NSC Hybrid Course retry system. If that doesn't mean anything to you, don't worry- we'll explain it at the event! :D
